AprilTags for Professional 3D Scans with the Dot3D App


Our suitcase sets KS5 with AprilTags has been specially assembled for the precise capture of 3D point clouds using mobile devices.

Each target has a unique ID and is recognized in real time by the Dot3D software. The app automatically calculates the exact position and orientation of the targets in space, which significantly improves the accuracy of 3D scans. In Dot3D,

AprilTags are primarily used to optimize measurement accuracy, for so-called loop closure (closing scan loops), and for linking multiple scans. If individual AprilTags are also measured with a total station, accuracies in the range of a few millimeters are possible.

The application is simple: the AprilTags are distributed throughout the scan area, while the Dot3D app automatically detects them and uses them to optimize the point cloud.
Especially in large or complex scenes, the AprilTags provide reliable referencing and minimize errors caused by drift or overlap.

The combination of mobile flexibility, powerful software, and AprilTags makes Dot3D a versatile solution for professional 3D documentation.
